Massage Along the Camino de Santiago - Portuguese Route

To complete seven massages in a three hour time frame, sessions were held in two separate offices in Valenca, Portugal.

Overview

Spa: Angélique Reflexologia e Massagens Clinica Renascer

Location: R. Val Flores 4,Valenca, Portugal

Visit: June 2026

Recommend: Before crossing into Tui, Spain; a relaxing Swedish massage works wonders for legs, feet and shoulders while on the Camino Portugues.

Background:

In late May 2026, six friends from college and I began a journey on the Camino Portugues Coastal then reached the Central Route in June 2026. Starting in Porto, Portugal; we planned a rest day in Valenca before walking across the old international rail-road bridge into Spain. I recommended Swedish massages at Angelique Reflexologia e Massagens. The online scheduler gives her high ratings. My friend, Maria, contacted Angelique through WhatsApp and arranged our sessions two months in advance. Angelique coordinated with two other therapists to provide the massages.

Facilities

When we arrived, Angelique had two locations setup for our massages. One facility, where she normally works, had a treatment room that holds one massage table and the other, the Clinica Renascer office, had a reception area and a treatment room.

I received my massage in the Clinica Renascer facility. I’ll refer to Clinica Renascer as the overflow facility because it was needed to get our group of seven on the tables within a reasonable time. It seemed to lack the basic amenities available in the primary treatment room.

The overflow facility had a large treatment room divided in half by a movable curtain, like those used in hospitals. With two people getting massages at the same time, each person had to disrobe while standing beside the massage table. The therapist stood outside the treatment door and waited for each person to get on the table.

I did not see any private changing rooms or personal lockers for storing items. The massage table took up much of the space and I didn’t see any other furniture in the room. A shelf held a few items. No chair or hanger for my personal items.

As shown in the photo, we left our backpacks and hiking poles in the reception area in the overflow facility. Fortunately, only the two massage therapists entered the overflow facility and our gear wasn’t in their way. At least one of my friends stayed with our hiking gear while the others got massages or explored Valenca. Being able to walk around the city without carrying hiking gear provided a sense of freedom.

Those getting massages in the overflow facility had to walk to the primary facility to access the restroom or to get water. The main office was in a different office building. It was visible from the overflow facility yet separated by an expanse of grass and cement then two sets of stairs. If you’re walking the Camino solo, then you may be able to get a session in the primary treatment room with the necessities.

Session

Pablo provided my massage. I asked for focused work on my feet, calves and hamstrings. He did a great job; only wish I could have had more time on the table. Forty-five minutes is a relatively short duration for a massage.

I didn't meet the other two therapists. My friends said their sessions were relaxing and therapeutic. Mine was likewise.

TIPS FOR Planning a VISIT to Angelique Reflexologia e Massagens

1. The online scheduler refers to Angelique Reflexologia e Massagens. To arrange massages for seven people, we confirmed our exact arrival times after reaching Porto, about four days before getting to Valenca.

2. We paid each therapist in cash; cards/payment apps were not accepted.

3. The massage facility is about a ten-minute walk before the massive, medieval Fortress of Valenca and the centuries-old truss bridge, “the Old International Bridge” (i.e., one lane for automobiles, a working train track above the road and a pedestrian walkway) to Spain. The fort has a fire house museum and another local museum. Visiting either wouldn’t be too strenuous before or after a massage.

4. The overflow facility didn’t have a room for showering before your session. If you’re walking a long distance to reach Valenca, consider bringing some hand wipes to freshen up before your session. Pablo didn’t use any damp cloths or hand towels during my session.
